Gibbs Breaks Ground on Rouses Grocery in New Orleans Central Business District

NEW ORLEANS, LA (1/13/11) – The Central Business District took another big leap towards urban renewal this week when Gibbs Construction crews broke ground on a new Rouses grocery store at the site of the former Sewell Cadillac Chevrolet building. The new store, slated to become a flagship store for the Thibodaux-based, family-owned company, will open in the Fall of 2011. The store will have 40,000 square feet of urban-designed shopping downstairs, including 28,000 square feet of fresh food. There will be seating inside and out, with ample parking available on the first and second floors.

“Gibbs Construction is very proud to join forces with Rouses Markets to build the latest addition to the Rouses Markets chain,” said Larry Gibbs, CEO of Gibbs Construction. “This Baronne Street store is an important component of the continued redevelopment of downtown New Orleans. We salute this meaningful demonstration of confidence that the Rouse family has placed in the bright future of New Orleans.”

Gibbs Construction has handled the renovation of several other Central Business and Arts District buildings, including the Civic Lofts, Louisiana ArtWorks and the Marriott Renaissance Arts Hotel. “Gibbs is very familiar with the neighborhood and appreciates the need for historic preservation,” said Donald Rouse.  “We’re privileged to have someone of their caliber, reputation and experience on the job.”

Donald Rouse said his family’s company is committed to working with other local companies. “Like Gibbs Construction, the subcontractors for the project. MCC Group and Hi-Tech Electric, are locally owned.  Daniel Winkert of John C. Williams Architects is the project architect for the renovation. We’re a local company, and buy local is our motto,” said Rouse. “We’re very proud of the great local team we’ve put together for this project.”
