The project included extensive repair, restoration and modernization in order to repurpose the building into modern loft apartments. A custom rooftop observation deck with 360-degree views of the city was also constructed.

AmesJudge Lionel R. Collins Elementary School ($13M) won the Excellence in Construction Award for Institutional—$10M-$25M. Located in Marrero, Louisiana, the school required complete renovation to the original historic schoolhouse, as well as new construction of six additional buildings, to serve as Montessori classrooms, a new administration building, kitchen, cafeteria and media room.

“These projects represent our team’s dedication to quality as well as the depth and diversity of our capabilities,” president Rob Wooderson said. “The commitment to solutions, teamwork, and service by all parties involved played an important role in their success. Good communication and collaboration among Gibbs, the design teams and the owners were also key to these successful projects.”

The ABC New Orleans/Bayou Chapter judging criteria includes contracted scope, project narrative, teamwork, overcoming challenges, safety, references, photographs of progress and supporting project materials. Gibbs Construction was also awarded the Platinum Safety Training & Evaluation Process (STEP) Award. The Platinum Level, awarded to Gibbs, is the highest level awarded. The 2013 award marks eleven years in a row that Gibbs has achieved this award of distinction for safety. The STEP program was developed and written by contractors, for contractors, and is administered by ABC. The program, which includes an application and a series of qualifications that must be met each year, is the benchmark by which companies verify their safety commitment and best safety practices. Gibbs Construction has entered Civic Theatre into the National ABC Excellence in Construction Awards. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on February 11, 2014, at the Grand Wailea in Maui, Hawaii.
