Murphy Oil Laboratory Building

Meraux, LA

DESCRIPTION:

Murphy Oil Laboratory Building project included new construction of a 15,000 sq. ft. process materials testing laboratory. The building is a steel-framed structure on a concrete, pile-supported foundation with blast-proof CMU and brick veneer exterior wall system, and a modified bitumen and standing seam metal roof. This unique and specialized facility contains special design of a blast-resistant structure and windows due to the building’s proximity to a petroleum refinery. Gibbs managed close coordination with the subcontractors for the custom-manufactured components that interconnect with the building structure.

Work included the installation of customized laboratory casework, highly sensitive equipment, and walk-in chemical storage components. Spark-resistant fan motors, fume hoods, and filtration systems were installed to maintain controlled environment in zones within the laboratory areas. These specialized ventilation systems are necessary for lab technician safety while they perform process quality control testing with explosive and volatile materials. Gibbs Construction ensured coordinated installation of these systems within limited areas above the ceiling in the laboratory without impairing structural framing, electrical and control systems and the aesthetic components of this state-of-the-art facility. Construction highlights requiring specialized quality control: blast resistant, 500 lb. exterior doors that had to be installed using a bobcat, blast resistant windows, acid and chemical resistant plumbing, acid resistant 55-ton sump pump and concrete containment vessel with 200-ton crane, specialized and custom modified ventilation systems specifically designed for use with explosive, volatile chemicals and materials.
